When my 2 year old was an infant he would play with my hair. I didn’t think anything of it, he was a baby, and he was grabbing things, why I would I think anything would become of it? 2 years later and he can’t fall asleep without playing with someone’s hair. He prefers it to be me, but if I’m not home he’ll settle for whoever’s there, and if it’s my husband then he plays with his facial hair.
I have tried giving him toys that have long hair, he can toss them across the room.. that didn’t work. I’ve tried blankets that have hair like material… nope, not moms hair. He likes to pull on the hair and nothing that I give him has the resistance like me.
I’ve mentioned it to the doctor and she said “oh yes… this happens all the time,” wow, ok, I had never heard of it before. The more I started talking about it with people, the more I realized that there are so many parents going through the same thing! Not one person that I’ve spoken to has found anything that has taken its place. Everyone just says “yeah, they did the same thing until they were X amount of years old.” I’ve heard that they stop as early as 2 and as late as 7!
I just keep telling myself that one day I will look back and laugh. One day I will wish that he was snuggling with me pulling on my hair. One day he will be too old to sit with me and too cool to “snuggle” with mom anymore. I just have to keep my chin up and savor every minute of those snuggles that I get right now.
All I can say for you other mommy’s out there getting their hair tugged on every night is I’m sorry and I feel your pain… literally!
