Declutter Declutter Declutter

The number one thing that I've read about a mess free home is to declutter!

As the name of my website suggests, I have a messy home. I try and try to keep it neat, clean and organized and it never happens. Everything that I read says that the #1 thing to getting a mess free home is declutter declutter declutter. This is my current mission!

We had a garage sale this summer, so we have purged the garage and barn. You can actually walk into the left side of the barn now! Everything that we didn’t sell I either gave to family and friends or donated. The only thing that I’m still working on is the kids clothes. SO… MANY…CLOTHES! I have donated 5 huge garbage bags full of clothes to Goodwill and still have a ton left. I can’t give away the clothes because we still have the 2 little guys who will eventually use them, if they’re not already. At the moment, I’m washing all of the clothes and putting them into bins to go up into the attic. I have 2 more bins out in the garage that I need to clean and organize… wish me luck! My goal is to have this job done by the end of the month.

I have also gone through our sons book shelf and made a pile of all the books that we don’t need anymore. I sent a lot of them to swap.com, which is an online consignment shop that accepts women’s and children’s items. I also sent some clothes that don’t fit the boys anymore and a couple other things that were just taking up room and not being used. The items still are not posted, but when they are and I see how it all works I will make a post about that. The other books that I couldn’t send, I took to a local used book store. I was able to get an $18 store credit that I give to our 8 year old. He loves to read and loves going there because the books are so cheap that he’s able to get a lot more than when we go to the book store.

I’m going to keep decluttering and purging things from the house or moving them to the attic or barn and see what happens. My hope is that I can minimize enough that it’s not so overwhelming to keep things organized and picked up… not just for me but for the rest of the family also!

If you have any tips on decluttering please let me know in the comments, because I really could use some help!

  1. I’m in the same boat you are right now..working on decluttering EVERYTHING! I did find a process that has helped though..have you heard of Kon Mari? It’s a book and there are several Facebook groups out there for it. I definitely recommend it! I’d say if you had a successful garage sale and can move around in your barn, you’re on to a good start though already! 🙂

  2. Amanda, I read a book a few years ago. The title was something like, “The Psychology Effects of Clutter.” I systematically went through all my closets and organized them. The effect was very calming and I found I enjoyed my home more. After I got organized in the closets, I decluttered much of my home decor. I now have clean, clutter-free surfaces. The absolute secret to me keeping a decluttered house is keeping my floors swept! When my floors are clean, both carpet and hardwood, I tend to keep everything else picked up. When it starts to show dog hair and dirt, I slowly start piling up clothes, mail, papers, etc. So try keeping your floors clean and see what happens! Kudos to you!!!
