Make Your Own Applesauce

How To Make Your Own Applesauce!

Fall is my favorite time of the year, I remember walking into the house and smelling cinnamon and apples cooking on the stove. I loved when my mom made homemade applesauce! She would always serve it warm… it’s so much better warm. If you’ve never tried it that way, try it today! Now that I have a family of my own, I hope that they have memories of helping me peel the apples, adding the sugar, and smelling the cinnamon and apples simmer.

This not an exact recipe. This is just a base, it will probably always turn out different but delicious each time!

What you will need:

A mix of apples – you don’t want to use all the same kind of apple, its best to use an apple pie mix. Our orchard creates their own bags specifically for apple pie. They also have large crates full of apples, each crate has a different type of apple. I like to get a bag for 1/2 peck and make my own mix. I just look at the signs and choose types that are good for baking and pies. I also like to add 1 apple that stays crisp (I like mine on the chunky side).

Sugar

Ground Cinnamon and/or Cinnamon Stick

Ground or Whole Nutmeg

Making Applesauce

You can use as many or as few apples as you’d like depending on the batch size that you’re looking for. I used 4 apples for this batch and it made enough for myself, my husband and our 2 year old.

Peeling Apples

You want to start out by pealing and coring the apples. I use a potato peeler and start at the stem and peel around the apple so I get a long “string” of peel when I’m finished. (You can make homemade apple chips with the peel that you take off!)

Coring the apples

Then, you want to core your apple. I just use a knife and cut four sides around the core.

Cutting the apples

Next, you’re going to cut the apples into cubes. I like to cut them all different sizes. If you like yours more on the chunky side, then you want to make sure that you have some larger pieces. If you want it smooth, then cut all of your pieces small. You can also use an immersion blender to blend your apples once they’re cooked for a smoother constancy.
Cooking the Apples

Once your apples are peeled, cut and cored, you just place them into a sauce pan and add the sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg to taste. You heat on Medium High heat just until boiling, then turn down to low and let simmer until desired consistency, stirring occasionally.
